Annual Physical

What is an annual physical exam?

The annual physical exam is an important part of building a trusting relationship with Dr. Oriaku. The more he gets to know you and understand your medical history, the easier it becomes for him to guide your medical choices.

Your annual physical exam helps to detect any potential medical abnormalities along with preventing dangers in the future. Dr. Oriaku designs your physical exam to ensure you can lead a long and healthy life.

The first part of the physical exam includes asking about your medical history along with your lifestyle choices, and addresses any concerns or questions about your health.

After gathering your medical history, Dr. Oriaku’s staff takes your vital signs including your blood pressure and heart rate. Dr. Oriaku also evaluates your general appearance by performing a head, neck, neurological, and abdominal exam. He’ll also use his stethoscope to listen to your lungs and heart. Lastly, he makes sure you are up to date with your immunizations.

What tests are specific to male and female physical exams?

Although the majority of the physical exam is the same for males and females, there are specific exams which can be done for each gender.

Additional examinations for males can include:

  • Diabetes exam: A blood test which checks your blood glucose levels
  • Testicular exam: A check of your testicles for lumps or changes in size
  • Cancer screenings: Such as checking for colon and prostate cancer

An annual physical exam for women can include:

  • Breast exam: checks for any visual abnormalities possibly indicating breast cancer such as lumps, sores, or change in the direction of your nipples
  • Pelvic exam: checks your uterus, cervix, vagina, and vulva for any abnormalities

Dr. Oriaku can also administer a Pap test and HPV test to screen for cervical cancer.

How can I stay healthy year-round?

It’s important to work hard and put in the time to stay healthy throughout the year. Life is better when you feel great, so Dr. Oriaku suggests the following to stay healthy:

  • Walk or exercise daily
  • Eat healthy foods
  • Maintain an uplifting mindset
